We've had the privilege of witnessing some of the best vows. From any on our wedding videos, you can see and feel that it is about meaning what you say that makes the best and sweetest of wedding vows.
There’s nothing wrong with traditional wedding vows, but personal wedding vows can make your wedding video a little more magical and intimate.
These are personal vows that we ask the couple to read out to each other, either by meeting up with them and reading the vows to each other, the day before the wedding or on the wedding day during the preparations.
You can always inject fun and jokes into your vows by using personal anecdotes. Talk about distinct characteristic traits your partner has. Use nicknames. By adding jokes adequately, it not only adds smiles to your guests’ faces, your vows also come with sincerity from the heart.
Before we proceed on to writing vow samples, here’s a guide on personalising your own wedding vow:
Structure your vow like a story.
Beginning
You can start off by how you and your spouse met, which is how most couples begin, since not all of your guests will know your story. If you still remember your first impression – be it good or bad – write it down. This makes your wedding vow personal and unique. Quotes are a really good alternative to seek inspiration from when you struggle to find the right words. Perhaps a line from you and your spouse’s favourite movie or TV show together, or that book you both cried reading.
Middle
Put your heartfelt emotions into words and deliver them. The main part of your wedding vow is about your spouse. How he/she makes you a better person, and how lucky and grateful you are to be by his/her side. Of course, don’t forget to add in what you love about them. Questions to things about are as follows:
What do you love about your partner?
What things has your partner done to make you a better person?
What bad times and good times have you gone through?
What are the ugly sides your partner has seen you in?
What are you grateful for?
What are your hopes and dreams with your partner.
End
Last but not least, end off your wedding vow with your promise to your spouse. A good vow does not have to be long, just 10-20 sentences. Instead, say it with your heart and put your emotions into it. You only get to do this once.
TIPS
First of all, it’s very important that you consider how your partner may be feeling about the whole idea. The old adage is true – opposites attract. Quite often, an extrovert is tying the knot with an introvert. Or... there’s always a talker!
If you’re the extrovert in the partnership, you need to consider this. While the idea of personalised vows may be exciting and fun for you, it might be the stuff of nightmares for your significant other. Try to be accommodating and realistic as you bring them to the same level of excitement that you’re experiencing. It probably won’t happen overnight! But if you’re in it together, you’ll get there.
Share Your Promises
“I vow to always love you… even during football season!” Now that is true love!
Think about the things you promise to always do for your spouse and write them out. Some can be broadly romantic, “I promise to always support you.” But the real magic comes out when you share the wedding vows that are unique to your love story. Your guests will love these light moments.
“I vow to let you play video games on the weekends.”
“I promise I will learn how to cook.”
Include a Defining Moment
You must have some awesome memories, stories or inside jokes together – your vows are the perfect place to relive one or two of those moments. Think of a story that defines your romance:
How did you first meet?
Did your love withstand hardship?
Do you go to Cedar Point every year, ride every roller coaster 25 times in a row to show your commitment? (Bit of a stretch – but fun! lol)
If you decide to include a story in your vows, a great way to use it; start with the short story and then circle back to it at the end.
